OPINION
Ask most middle-aged or older people, and you’ll likely get this answer: “I don’t recognize my nation anymore.” Asking that same person, “So what went wrong, and why don’t you recognize America any longer?”
The most often given answers are: Our nation has lost its sense of right and wrong. Our country has gone crazy. America has lost its morality. The common thread is that our country has lost its very soul.
One can argue that “we, as a nation,” have lost our way because church attendance has plunged over the decades. For instance, in the 1950s, nearly 70% of all Americans attended church or religious services on a weekly basis. Today, that number has plunged to less than 30%.
So, why is attending mass or a synagogue important to society? What relevance does listening to a Rabbi, Priest, or Southern Baptist minister have in a society? Years ago, my daughter came to me one evening in tears and said she had forgotten to write a paper on “Would America’s legal system be different had our nation practiced Mithraism instead of Christianity?” Her paper was due the next day for her college Philosophy class, if my memory serves me correctly. After “Googling” who or what Mithraism was, I completed the short 500-word essay for her, and she got an A- on the paper. Yes, I know we cheated to some degree, but I did have a discussion with her on how and why I came to the conclusion that I did.
It turns out that some 2,500 (remember I am trying to remember something from 20 plus years ago) years ago, there was a fellow named Mithria who traveled across upper Europe preaching what effectively were the Ten Commandments. He was supposedly born of a virgin on what we now celebrate as Christmas day, lived to be 33 years old, and was ultimately sacrificed for the sins of the world. Supposedly!
The conclusion was this: Our legal system and society would be much the same. The simple fact is that we base many laws on Biblical principles and the Ten Commandments. IE: Thou shalt not commit murder, Thou shall not steal, commit adultery, honor our parents, covet, etc., etc… And these are the same teachings that Mirthria taught, supposedly.
Do you remember the old television shows “I Love Lucy,” “Gunsmoke,” and “Leave It to Beaver?” All of these programs (and many more) had, as a general rule, morality-based themes. You always learned that honesty is all that matters from Sheriff Andy Taylor when he was teaching Opie a lesson. Lucy and Ricky slept in separate beds, and Sheriff Matt Dillon always spoke to and treated Miss Kitty with respect and honor. Contrast those programs with “Grey’s Anatomy,” one of the more recent super-popular programs broadcast and now on Netflix. Nearly all of the main characters are having affairs (even if married), abortion is a primary theme, and the righteousness that goes with it, gay marriage, gay sex scenes, and more. Everything immoral is coveted in this program. Immorality is not just shown, but it is celebrated, and Grey’s Anatomy is one of many that produce and show almost identical social issues.
Television is not the root cause of many of society’s issues today, but it reflects how far our country has traveled off the rails. How far have we traveled?
- America has spent over Twenty-Two Trillion dollars on welfare programs since its inception in the mid-1960s. And we are no better off today with poverty than we were when Lyndon Johnson was President.
- We have had war after war (which we either caused or joined in) since World War II for no other reason than to line the pockets of the Military Industrial Complex. This is at the expense of tens of thousands of lost lives of our nation’s young men and women. IE; Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, and now we are about to be consumed with Ukraine and Russia. This is a classic example of the massive corruption on Capitol Hill.
- Incredibly stupid social justice issues. IE: Men dressed as women should be allowed to use public restrooms with our daughters, wives, and mothers. Boys are competing with our daughters in sports. Boys who dress and act like girls can now change into their sports uniforms with our daughters in the girls’ locker room. Men dressing up as women serving in our military. This has degraded our military structure and moral codes dramatically. Ask any military officer off the record. Gay pride parades where men perform sex acts in the middle of the streets of many of our cities across our land.
- The mass slaughter of over 70,000,000 of our children as a matter of convenience rather than a medical necessity. This has been a direct cause of our lack of respect for humanity and has dramatically degraded the value of life in our society.
- We no longer have equal justice under the law. If you happen to be from a family of privilege, you’re treated very differently from those who are not. Our justice system has been corrupted to almost unbelievable levels. This tiered legal system is destroying our courts and legal system.
- The Pharmaceutical Industry has corrupted our entire medical system in this nation. And America is paying the price with their lives and their money. This, again, is a direct result of the corruption on Capitol Hill.
When pondering where and what this nation was back in the 1950s and 60s and compared with today, there is no disputing that we have traveled into an era that is destroying our nation’s very fabric. The mass media is allowed to lie to our country on a nightly basis. The elected officials on Capitol Hill are nearly all corrupt and in the pockets of big business. Our social norms and morality have been corrupted by perversion, and our education system has been corrupted by far-left radical idealism.
Our once great nation is no longer great. We have sunk morally, and our nation is no longer held to high standards for integrity, honor, or decency. Unless we have a massive re-awakening of God and morality in our country, we are truly doomed for permanent failure.
