Political corruption apparently knows no bounds. In the case of Utah, it is not just there, but it is glaringly apparent for the world to see. Allow me to explain.
Utah had an opportunity to send a very qualified and true conservative to the United States Senate to replace retiring Senator Orrin Hatch. The Beehive State has a rather unusual nomination process in comparison to the rest of the nation. Briefly, this is the process. You campaign your tail off and basically, you end up at a convention held in mid to late summer. You can avoid the convention if you manage to garner an unachievable amount of signatures on a petition which would and will no doubt be challenged by one of the candidates who is going to the convention.
In the case of Utah (which portrays itself as religiously and politically conservative), in the last cycle (2018), there were in effect three candidates who were legitimate candidates. One, of course, was Mittens (aka; Mitt Romney), Dr. Mike Kennedy (a State Representative), and Larry Meyers (a uber-conservative Attorney from Southern Utah). Larry was making waves despite the lack of help from the states Republican Party. In fact, at one point, the Republican Party even went so far as to delay sending the party’s mailing list to Meyers, when they had given the Romney campaign the lists month’s before. This delay tactic as expected restricted Meyers ability to fundraise and gave Romney a clear edge in the contest.
The other interesting piece to this Utah puzzle was the very late entry into the race by Dr. Kennedy. Utah is another one of the 50% plus one vote states. Meyer’s was poised to force a runoff between both he and Romney. The rest of the field would have been eliminated, and Meyers team had already begun creating attack ads to start discrediting Romney the Mormon Puritan. Today there is almost irrefutable proof that Dr. Mike Kennedy was placed in the campaign and funded by the Romney camp to split the Tea Party vote in Utah. The Tea Party is a very formidable force in the state. Anytime you have a candidate enter a race and not campaign to any significant degree and furthermore all but refuse to say anything less than praiseworthy comments about the frontrunner; something is rotten in Denmark. And, that is precisely what we had with Dr. Kennedy entering this race. With Romney’s money supplying both campaigns, Meyers ended up in third place at the convention. Plan accomplished for Romney; now he could on to win the general election after he defeated a non-campaigning Dr. Kennedy in the run-off election.
Now, I go back to one of my originating questions. What is Romney doing in Utah? He had a very lucrative life, and a happy one from all indications back in Massachusetts. He travels out to Utah, buys a costly lot on what are known as the “benches” in an exclusive suburb of Salt Lake City (these are the foothills to the Wasatch Mountain range), and he builds what can only be described as a multimillion-dollar compound.
Like President Trump, ‘Mittens’ has always been a CEO or President of something. Be it his corporations or Governor, the fact is, he has never been a legislator. Why would he all of a sudden want to go from being known as a Former Presidential Nominee to “One of One-Hundred” legislators and top of that, be the “Junior Senator” from Utah?
Everyone remembers his scathing attack on ‘then-candidate Trump’ back during the primary races. Romney all but called Trump a ‘robber-Barron pedophile’ in his attacks. Then Trump wins the White House and Romney dials it back a notch until he won the Senate seat, and now he puts out another vicious attack via the Washington Post.
Early in Romney’s Op-Ed, he writes this;
It is well known that Donald Trump was not my choice for the Republican presidential nomination. After he became the nominee, I hoped his campaign would refrain from resentment and name-calling. It did not. When he won the election, I hoped he would rise to the occasion. His early appointments of Rex Tillerson, Jeff Sessions, Nikki Haley, Gary Cohn, H.R. McMaster, Kelly, and Mattis were encouraging. But, on balance, his conduct over the past two years, particularly his actions last month, is evidence that the president has not risen to the mantle of the office.
Only to be followed by this searing strike against Trump’s character;
To a great degree, a presidency shapes the public character of the nation. A president should unite us and inspire us to follow “our better angels.” A president should demonstrate the essential qualities of honesty and integrity, and elevate the national discourse with comity and mutual respect. As a nation, we have been blessed with presidents who have called on the greatness of the American spirit. With the nation so divided, resentful and angry, presidential leadership in qualities of character is indispensable. And it is in this province where the incumbent’s shortfall has been most glaring.
Remember this; Mitt Romney is ‘one of the establishments golden boy’s.’ Romney has 100% name recognition as does Donald Trump. Romney has Karl Rove and his Super-Pac “American Crossroads” which can raise hundreds of millions of dollars with the simple blink of an eye. For two long years we have witnessed the Democrats attack the President and now that Pelosi has been sworn in, we will no doubt see “Impeachment Hearings” waged against the Trump administration and the President himself. The Democrats are not alone in their immense hatred for this President. Next, we have “The Swamp” comprised of both Dem’s and Republicans who are the “good-old-boy” network of politicoes and cronyism which have been operating to take down this President. As if that all is not bad enough, then we have the complicit media who will work as a finely tuned orchestra to aid and abet the above factions.
Deny all you like, but an Impeachment process on Capitol Hill will substantially weaken this President. No, he won’t be convicted in the Senate, but the hearings alone will strike to the heart of the Administration and will severely weaken his already shaky approval numbers.
It is my guess that Mitt Romney has known all along and took a gamble that Trump would be impeached and then he as a sitting “United States Senator” with a freshly padded resume, money, name ID could and would step in as the “Savior of the Party” to challenge Trump in 2020 if the President even decided to seek re-election. To be candid with you, I’m not so sure he will, by having come off of 4-years of blistering attacks against everything he has fought so hard to accomplish.
I will say this, if Trump is not on the ballot in 2020, and Mittens is, I will be voting for “anybody else” I can think of. I will absolutely refuse to vote for this politically treasonous shill named Romney!
To answer the biggest question of all, “YES” Utah, you owe America and the conservative voters a “YUGE” apology for sending this opportunistic fake Republican shill to the United States Senate. He will be nothing but a thorn in the side of everything this President wants to accomplish for our nation.
