Have you noticed that most of the political ‘rising stars‘ being promoted today by the main-stream media all seem to be ‘socialists?’ Names like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Beto O’Roark, Elizabeth Warren, and many more are now regulars on most of the alphabet talk shows on Sunday morning. What began mostly as a campaign gimmick/strategy for former Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has officially mushroomed into a movement that is catching on across our nation.

Sanders managed to create all but a cult following in 2016 by promising everything from free education and healthcare to a free mule and 160-acres. If you listened long enough to his message, you could also obtain a free Porche, and a yacht. When Bernie’s “free-stuff” began acquiring a bit of tarnish from even the most liberal of political host and pundits, he then coined the term Democratic Socialism. The definition is a bit obscure, but apparently, it is supposed to mean that we become socialist, but our leadership will be duly elected or re-elected every 4-years in lieu of being appointed for life, as the leaders of most true socialist nations are. In case you’re wondering, here is the actual definition of “Socialism” as defined by Websters Dictionary.

  1. Any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods.

 2. system of society or group living in which there is no private property.

 3. system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state.

 4. stage of society in Marxist theory transitional between capitalism and communism and distinguished by unequal distribution of goods and pay according to work done.

Bernie Sanders: the self-proclaimed “Father of Modern Democratic Socialism” in America.

It has (for the most part) been agreed or conceded on that Bernie would have won the nomination, had the Clinton camp not cheated for her to win the nomination back in 2016. At this point, one has to be very, very concerned for our future. How did Bernie Sanders obtain such a large following? Why did it happen? Lastly; where do we go from here?

The reality of “Capitalism” is that: some become very wealthy. In a capitalist economy, most can achieve ‘middle-class’ economic status fairly easily through hard work and a never-say-die attitude. On the flip side of the coin; with capitalism, you’ll always have a segment of the population that don’t fare so well and languish in poverty. In fact, more than 50% of America today is not considered to be middle-class. More than half of our nation lives below middle-class status economically, and a vast majority of those live at or below the poverty line.

Barack Obama knew this back in 2008. He knew that we had reached the tipping point with the economic meltdown that America was suffering through. He used this to his political advantage. Remember; “Everyone will have a cell phone, everyone that needs them will have food stamps, healthcare, and affordable housing.

It is challenging to sell capitalism to someone who is wondering where their next meal is coming from.

This is precisely why and how Bernie’s message resonated so well to so many across our land. He knew that if he promised “free-stuff” to the masses, most of those masses would eventually want the freebies if it helps to improve their lives.

While the political right points to Venezuela as the epitome of “failed socialism,” the left (IE: Alexandria, Beto, and Gang) look to Sweden, Norway, and England as examples of successful socialism. America today is facing some very extreme challenges. The world is rapidly changing in many ways. College degrees that once earned you a great living, not so much anymore. Where you once could make a great living as a shop owner (selling books, tapes, radio’s, etc.) has gone away. The shop owner has been replaced by WalMart and Amazon.

Many Americans today (primarily because it has been written out of history and we don’t teach history much anymore) don’t realize that socialism was tried once before in our nation. The Pilgrims at Jamestown tried it for a little over 4-years back in the early 1600’s. It failed miserably and was actually the catalyst that gave us what we now celebrate as Thanksgiving.

I do not for a second believe that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has a mean bone in her body. Honestly, I think that her heart is in the right place and she wants to see her neighbors and friends in the Bronx do well. The Bronx is a Burrough in New York City that has long been a struggling city within a city who has been the poster child for the failed LBJ policies known as the “Great Society.” If ever there was the perfect example of “how and why” socialism won’t work in America, it should be the program that the United States has now spent an estimated $1 Trillion on and we still have poverty, hunger, and blight in many urban areas across our land.

Living in inner-cities which are crime ridden with gang violence is very appealing to hear that you can get out by voting for a particular politician.

The problem with selling capitalism to the Bronx is this. The people are on the 4th and 5th generation of welfare. The politicians want to keep citizens drawing welfare because it allows them to remain in their cushy Congressional and Senate jobs. The politicoes complain that the Republicans don’t like them and that is why they are where they are, and it is only “I” the Democrat who can ensure you continue to eat.

The tragic truth for our nation is this. Over half of our country is now struggling just to get by. College costs are astronomical and to be successful; you’re going to need a degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Medicine, or some other high-end degree. Otherwise, you need to learn to be a Plumber, Electrician, machine operator or some trade along those lines to earn a great paycheck and be able to purchase your first home.

This is where the door has been opened for the Socialists to prosper. It is tough to earn a good living in our nation today with degrees and education from the 70’s. We have advanced so rapidly that is has left many behind in our society. It is tough to go back to school at 50 and learn a new degree field when you have mortgages to pay, car loans, your own children’s education, etc. So when a politician comes along and promises that the school you’re now paying for is free, and the healthcare is free, it is very appealing to that voter. And this is the problem we on the right now face.

Margarate Thatcher once said; The problem with Socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money.

What difference does it make? We have a $20 Trillion debt, what is another trillion or two going matter? My life can be better and that $1000 a month my daughter costs me at the University would go along way to helping us live a bit more comfortably. Think this is not what is going through peoples minds when Beto is so eloquently explaining how it is going to improve everyone’s life? Think again, my friends. Socialism is very real, and it is coming unless Donald Trump can resurrect the American dream.

What most of the new Democrats and Liberals don’t realize when espousing the “Garden of Eden” known as Sweden and Norway, America pay’s hefty amounts of money to provide them with a military. New Zealand, Australia, Ireland, Great Britain, most of Europe, Japan, South Korea and on it goes, are all protected through peace treaties by our military. Sweden doesn’t have to pay $2 or 3 Billion for a Trident Sub because we do. Yes, they do purchase a few fighters but that is simply to fulfill their NATO agreements. Sweden is not going to stem a Russian invasion if that transpired. Now Sweden because of their huge income tax base, can provide health coverage for their 9-million residents. New Zealand, for instance, has fewer residents than Chicago. Of course, they pay for health care for its citizens.

Will the United States have a Stalin or Lenin version of socialism, that is highly doubtful barring a full-blown dictator. Will we end up with a social system along the lines of Britain or Holland, very likely. And I don’t see it happening that far in the future. Barack Obama’s healthcare put us on the road toward that end and as we all know, the United States doesn’t undo programs once they’re implemented. Tragic but true.
